Lash Lift & Perming Tools: A UK Technician's Guide

A lash lift is a perm for the natural lashes: it lifts and curls them from the root so the eye looks more open, with no extensions and no daily curling. Done well it lasts weeks; done carelessly it over-processes lashes or leaves them uneven. The chemistry comes in kits, but the control comes from the tools. This UK guide explains the lash technician's toolkit — what each metal tool does, what's consumable, and how to keep everything hygienic.

What actually happens in a lift

The lashes are combed up onto a silicone shield or rod, held in place, and treated with a lifting lotion (to reshape) then a fixing lotion (to set), usually followed by a nourishing step. The skill is in placing every lash cleanly on the shield, evenly spaced and not crossed — and that placement is entirely down to your separating tool and how steady your hand is.

The lifting and separating tool

The core reusable tool is a slim, double-ended stainless-steel lash lifting and separating tool. One end is a fine pick/comb for isolating and aligning individual lashes on the shield; the other typically a smoother paddle or lifter for pressing lashes flat and lifting them into position. Look for:

  • A fine, well-finished tip that separates lashes without scratching the shield or the lid.
  • Surgical stainless steel that wipes clean of lotion and sanitises without corroding.
  • A balanced, non-slip handle — you're working millimetres from the eye, so control is everything.

Many techs also keep fine-tip tweezers (see our brow-tools guide) for the most delicate isolating, and a clean spoolie for combing through.

What's consumable versus reusable

It helps to separate the two:

  • Reusable (tools): the lifting/separating tool, tweezers, and a brush handle — all cleaned and sterilised between clients.
  • Single-use / kit (consumables): silicone shields or rods (sized for curl strength), lifting and fixing lotions, adhesive, micro-brushes and lint-free pads. These are replaced per client and bought as a system; always follow the kit's exact timings.

Hygiene and safety — non-negotiable

This is work right against the eye, so standards are strict:

  • Sterilise reusable tools between every client and use fresh single-use consumables each time.
  • Always patch test a new client before the first treatment — the lotions and adhesive can cause reactions.
  • Follow the kit timings precisely. Over-processing is the most common cause of brittle, frazzled lashes; a timer is your friend.
  • Make sure you hold the appropriate training and insurance to offer lash lifting in the UK.

Care of your tools

Wipe lotion off the separating tool immediately after use — fixing lotion can leave a residue if left to dry — then clean and sterilise. Store the fine tip protected so it isn't bent or blunted against other tools.

What to buy first

The one reusable tool to invest in is a quality stainless lifting and separating tool; pair it with a fine tweezer you already trust and a reputable lift kit for the consumables. Good tools plus disciplined timing is the whole recipe for clean, repeatable lifts.
