Silversmiths, bench jewellers, jewellery students and hobbyists moving beyond a beginner kit.
Hammers and blocks by job
- Chasing hammers: a broad flat face for driving punches, stamps and chasing tools
- Planishing hammers: a polished face for smoothing and hardening a formed piece
- Raising hammers: for raising hollowware and bowls
- Brass, nylon & Teflon mallets: non-marring, for forming and shaping without marking the work
- Dapping & doming sets: graded half-spheres and punches for domes, cups and beads
- Bench blocks, stakes & anvils: hardened surfaces to strike on and shapes to form over
How to choose
Match the hammer to the job: a light chasing hammer for stamping and fine work, a heavier planishing hammer for sheet forming. For dapping, pick a set with punches graded in small steps, because big gaps cause flat spots on domes. Always work on a true, hardened bench block; a soft surface absorbs the strike.
Frequently asked questions
Chasing hammer or planishing hammer: what's the difference?
Chasing hammers have a broad flat face for driving punches and stamps. Planishing hammers have a polished face designed to leave a smooth, slightly work-hardened surface on formed pieces.
Do I need brass or nylon mallets?
Yes, if you're shaping soft metal or setting stones where steel would mark the work. Nylon is softer than brass and suits plated or fine-finish pieces.
What size dapping set should I start with?
A set of around 10 to 18 punches covers most bench work: beads, rivets and small domes. Larger sets with a bigger block suit earrings and cuff components.
Do you dispatch the same day?
We aim to. Orders placed before 2pm UK time, Monday to Friday, are targeted for same-day dispatch; later orders are dispatched from the next working day. It is a target, not a guarantee. Most UK orders arrive 2-3 working days after dispatch.
Do you offer trade or bulk pricing?
